Aurinko nousee / More light

Tällä viikolla on kelit olleet sellaisia, että kenttätöitä on siirretty myöhempään ja lentoja peruttu. Sääennusteissa on ollut hurjia kelejä luvassa, jotka ei sitten onneks ole täysin toteutuneet. Toki tutkalla mitattiin 37m/s puuskissa, mutta enemmän ollaan oltu siinä 15m/s nurkilla. Aurinko ei vielä näy kylille, mutta aamuisin on ollut todella hienoja värejä. Kotivuonon jäälautalla loikoilleet pari mursua sai opiskelijoissa säpinää aikaa ja jonot kaukoputkelle oli pitkiä... 

We are definitely moving towards daylight, although the weather has still been "interesting". The shelves at the grocery store are beginning to look a bit empty because cancelled flights. With the increasing daylight, people have spotted belugas (!) in our home fjord. Some walruses were hanging out there as well.

Kylmää hiihtoa / Frozen skiers

Parikymmentä astetta pakkasta jäähdyttää tehokkaasti. Käytiin kuitenkin testaamassa Hiorthhamnin ladut. Aurinko ei vielä paista laaksoon, mutta tunturien laet on jo hienosti auringossa. Päivä pitenee 20 minuuttia joka päivä, ja sen kyllä huomaa. Tuntuu jopa hieman hassulta lähteä observatoriolle töihin siten, että otsalamppu voi olla taskussa.

The snowmobile battery is still inside in the warmth, which makes it somewhat smarter than us. But the ski tracks were actually really nice almost to the turn-around point at Hiorthhamn. The increasing daylight also means that the whole town is out snowmobiling. The ski trail goes parallel to the "scooter highway" and we noticed that our clothes had definitely acquired the typical smell of being out with a snowmobile (even though we were on skis ourselves).
