Aurinkorannalla / The sunny side of the fjord

Täältä Longyearbyenistä katsottuna Isfjord-vuonon toisella puolella paistaa aina aurinko. Pienen suunnittelun jälkeen päätetään lähteä duuniporukalla muutaman päivän hiihtoretkelle. Homma tyssää melkeen alkuunsa "pienen" myräkän takia, mutta venekyyti onnistuu lopulta pari päivää myöhässä. Sää ei ole kovin herkullinen ja ensimmäinen iltapäivä on märkää hiihtoa lumisateessa. Päästään kuitenkin lopulta jäätikölle. Seuraavana päivänä ei nähdä yhtään mitään: pilvet on matalalla ja luntakin tulee. Yön aikana sää selkiytyy ja karhuvahdissa on mukava tsiigailla maisemia. Olemme keskellä jäätikköä ja kartalla oleva pieni valkoinen läikkä tarkoittaa konkreettisesti sitä, että tarvitaan vielä kaksi päivää, jotta päästään takaisin vuonolle. Oranssit "halpisahkiot" toimivat ihan hyvin tällaisella retkellä, mutta viistorinteissä niiden kanssa sai jonkin verran temppuilla.

We had been discussing a skiing trip to Borebreen for some time now, and, finally, we were on our way across Isfjorden with the skis and pulks full of stuff. The practical minimum group size is about six persons: there needs to be a polar bear guard through the night and with six people each taking 1.5h, everybody has the opportunity to sleep (almost) sufficiently. First we had some wet skiing to reach the glacier and then the first full day was a mental struggle in complete whiteout. During the second night, the clouds cleared and we found ourselves in the middle of an enormous glacier that had branches in every direction. It was just us and the couple of geese that flew past towards unknown destinations. The geese probably thought we were the silly ones, because flying across the glaciers is certainly easier than skiing. Well, unless you try to fly with a pulk...
