Tromssan tropiikissa / Heading south

Lähdettiin "vaihteeksi" Kvaløyan suuntaan telttailemaan ja vaeltelemaan. Mukaan tuli tällä kertaa jo Kanadan ajoilta tuttu australialainen Jane, joka aikoo jatkaa myöhemmin Haltille lankomiehen lakimiehen kanssa. Wanhan kaavan mukaan ruokaostokset hoidettiin Eide Handelissa ja päivät vietettiin vähän siellä sun täällä. Muutama hyvä mäki oli jäänyt kaivelemaan edellisiltä kerroilta sään takia, mutta nyt oli erinomaiset kelit. Tai oikeastaan vähän liiankin erinomaiset, koska +15 astetta tuntui jo tosi lämpimältä ja +25 alkoi olla sietämätön kuumuus, jossa ei voinut enää tehdä oikein mitään. Paitsi syödä jätskiä...

Another adventure in Kvaløya! This time we had a special guest from down under with us joining the climbs and dayhikes. The area near Tromsø is full of interesting summits to visit and this time we had a spell of good weather that turned into a curse of hot weather with temperatures approaching +30C. It was usually cooler higher up but first one must go through the forests and clouds of flies...

Ensin on todella hieno ja aurinkoinen työviikko, jonka jälkeen viikonloppuna pilvet laahaa vuononpohjaa. Näinhän se aina toimii ja kyläkin pursuaa risteilyturisteja. Turistien määrät on kasvaneet hurjasti viime vuosina ja, vaikka suurin osa toimiikin ihan asiallisesti, niin joukkoon mahtuu kaikenkarvaista väkeä. Tuoreessa paikallislehdessä ihmetellään sitä, miten jotkut kävelevät pokkana lastentarhoihin katselemaan menoa tai käymään vessassa. Käyttäytyvätköhän näin myös kotikaupungeissaan?

Everybody knows how great it is to look outside from the office and admire the sunny weather just to wake up in rain and low clouds on weekend. The good news is that despite the weather, our Italian colleagues managed to launch their OLIMPO-balloon successfully. The balloon rose to about 37km altitude and is currently somewhere above Greenland. Only a fraction of the data could be downloaded directly, so their next adventure is to locate and recover the instrument from Greenland, northern Canada or Russia...

Vieraamme tulivat takaisin pohjoiseen suuntautuneelta risteilyltä huomattavan vähän nukkuneina (valaita, mursuja, jääkarhuja, hienoja uimarantoja...), mutta siitä huolimatta intoa riitti. Joten lähdettiin eväiden kanssa katselemaan Wahlenbergbreen-jäätikköä. Vuono oli mukavan tyyni, mutta Yoldiabuktan kohdalla piti hidastaa ja puikkelehtia kaikenkokoisten jääklimppien ja -vuorien välistä. Löydettiin mm. uimaranta...

Another beautiful and calm day in Svalbard offered no choice: ignore the need for sleep and head out there! So, we packed the lunch and left for an inviting yet cool day excursion to the other side of the fjord. Wahlenbergbreen glacier did not disappoint and there were lots of smaller and larger icebergs in front of the glacier. There were also a number of big splashes when several tons of ice decided to fall down into the sea.
