Lähimaaston meininkiä / Around the block

Noora wanhat koulukaverit kävi tsekkaamassa maisemia (ja uimassa vuonossa). Hiukan oli tuulista ja pari turskaakin pääsi karkuun touhutessa. Koiratarhan haahkat oli vielä munimassa, joskin huhu kiertää, että poikasia on jo näkynyt. Lyhytnokkahanhilla oli selvästi pieniä höyhenkasoja jo seuraamassa emoa. Mursu ja naalikin nähtiin, joten tulihan ainakin Huippisten perusteet hoidettua.

The summer is here with big cruise ships and unusual airplanes at the airport. Our guests did take the usual SAS flight and the basic package included pretty much everything and possibly a kitchen sink. A bumpy boat ride - with a quick view to several nicely sized cods that got away - was a nice starter. We also did a somewhat windy walk to the nearby hills and found some fossils to take home. The only thing that was not on agenda was sufficient sleep.

Oikea juhannussää / Nordenskiöldfjellet

Kerrankin sattui oikein hieno sää, joten ei muuta kuin suunta kohti Nordenskiöld-tunturin huippua. Takki piti laittaa reppuun jo kylän laidalta toiselle kävellessä. Sopiva pieni tuulenvire viilensi jonkin verran tunturiylängöllä - ei kuitenkaan niin paljon, että takkia olisi tarvinnut. Bongattiin muutamat kiirunat ja pikkukukkia siellä sun täällä. Enimmäkseen käveltiin lumettomalla tundralla, mutta kyllähän sieltä pari upottavaa lumiestettäkin löytyi...

The weather was perfect for a long trip in the mountains. The summer temperature was on the warmer side (i.e. over +10C) and the uphills were pretty hot. The clouds came in only after we were back in town (thinking of ice cream...)

Kesäkauden kukkia

Mursujengi on viihtynyt hyvin lentoaseman kupeessa. Luultavasti koko kylä on käynyt nuuhkimassa mursuja - parempi olla suosiolla tuulen yläpuolella. Samaan aikaan kivien koloista alkaa tunkea kaikenlaista pikkukasvia kukkineen. Niin ja kyläraitti on täynnä turisteja. Kesä on täällä.

A huddle of walrus have reserved the beach next to a BBQ spot at Hotelneset. Sometimes there's nobody but other times there are 15-20 walrus hanging out. This is, of course, an enjoyable experience for anybody who wants to know whether or not walrus smell bad. A quick visit to the downwind side will leave no doubts. Meanwhile, the flowers are popping up here and there. And lots of aimlessly wondering tourists are filling the central area of the town. Push to open the door to Svalbardbutikken and that other door there is the one to the Museum. And, yes, we keep those reindeer inside the fence for the tourists...
