Konebongausta / Plane spotting

Nooran yhteystyökumppaneilla on mittauskampanja käynnissä ja päästiin tsiigailemaan niiden "lentävää observatoriota". Wanha kunnon DC-3 on otettu takaisin piirustuspöydälle paranneltavaksi ja moottorien vaihdon ja avioniikan päivityksen jälkeen Alfred Wegener -instituutilla on kunnolla pörisevä mittauskone käytössä.

A slow flying aircraft is a perfect platform for all sorts of meteorological measurements in the arctic. We had a great opportunity to get a dedicated tour to examine the instrumentation in a modernised DC-3 (Basler BT-67 to be more precise). Radiometres, radars and things that measure stuff and ice in clouds. Pretty cool.

Hanaskogdalen

Sääennustus lupaili erinomaista hiihtokeliä ja hetken pohdinnan jälkeen päädyttiin toisella puolella vuonoa olevien tunturien taakse. Pienen kelkkapäristelyn jälkeen laitettiin reput selkään ja lähdettiin karvaamaan ylämäkeen. Näkyvyys ei ollut kovin ihmeellinen ja tuulikin oli huomattavasti navakampi kuin oli ennustettu. Ei menty huipulle saakka, koska huippua ei näkynyt. Mutta muuten oli ihan jees...

Going skiing is always a good reason to head out of the town. This time the plan eventually converged into heading out to Hanaskogdalen, where the current weather appeared to be reasonably good. Well, there was more wind and less visibility than we would have preferred, but the snow was pretty good.

Mohnbukta / A cold snowmobile ride

Pitkästä aikaa Huippuvuorilla on vuodenaikaan nähden lähes normaalit talvikelit. Siis noin -20..30C ja siihen päälle raikas 10m/s tuuli. Hiihtämiseen sää on aivan liian kylmä lähinnä tuulen takia, mutta joku keksi, että kelkkailessahan se ei muka haittaa. Laakson pohjalla alimmainen puoli metriä on lievää lumipöllyä ja sivutuulessa puuskat heiluttaa kelkkailijaa. Itärannikon kohteeseen Mohnbuktaan on matkaa noin 90km ja matkalta löytyi yksi pysähdyspaikka, jossa ei tuullut ihan älyttömästi. Kohteessa oli yllättäen lähes tyyntä ja vuononpohjan jäätiköiden seinämät kimaltelivat auringonvalossa. Karhuja ei näkynyt. Tullaan uudestaan, kunhan kelit vähän lämpenevät.

It's not the temperature (-20ish), but combine the freezing temperatures with 10m/s or so average winds and a pleasant skiing trip quickly becomes more like a survival test. Been there and done that sufficiently many times to know it can be done if one absolutely must. So, instead of that I joined forces with some of the petrol heads from work. The idea was to do a snowmobile trip to Mohnbukta, which is on the east coast. The riding itself was easy in good visibility. Otherwise, the temperature felt like minus four hundred, or thereabouts. With wind buffeting the snowmobile. I did have some extra layers to add if it had been, like, really cold. Anyway, I've never before had the heating set so high on the handle grips...

Auringonvaloa / Sunshine

Kun on yötöissä tutkalla opiskelijoiden kanssa, niin aamiaisen aikaan (puolen päivän nurkilla) näkyy jo hienosti auringon valaisemia tunturinrinteitä. Kuvassa näkyy hienosti EISCAT-tutkan molemmat antennit ja firman observatorio, jonne aurinko paistaa jo!

The sunshine is slowly but surely approaching the town. The mountains in the south are still blocking direct sunlight, but one cannot complain about the view. I am actually working during evenings/nights this week: fieldwork with students at the EISCAT radar.

Hyvä lumi, huono näkyvyys / Skiing

Sääennustuksen mukaan eilen oli hieno sää (ei ollut) ja tänäänkin olisi vielä ihan hyvä keli hiihtelyyn. Lähdettiin Larsbreenin suuntaan tavoitteena Trollsteinin rinteet. Ylempänä oli varsin puuskaisa tuuli, mutta eipä siellä nähnytkään kovin pitkälle. Hieno sää, jep jep. Lumi oli kyllä varsin mainiota.

With all the new snow from the last days, a ski trip was what the doctor (in space physics) ordered. We did not wake up in the sunshine, but the forecast predicted partly cloudy weather for today. I think the definition of "partly cloudy" probably means that only this part of the world is cloudy. Not a particularly great visibility on the glacier either, but at least the snow was nice.

Broidi perheineen kävi tsekkaamassa maisemia. Edellisellä kerralla säät eivät suosineet, mutta tällä kertaa oli ainakin kirkasta mutta kylmää. Peruspakettiin kuului sipsien lisäksi naapurimäen kiipeämistä ja jääluolaseikkailua.

It is always a bit of a hit and/or miss with the weather up here in Svalbard, which our visitors have also noticed. This time the weather was mostly clear but it was also windy and cold. The weather report stated "feels like -40C". You know it is cold when it is 20 degrees warmer inside an ice cave...

Sinne se kaamos sitten taas vilahti ja tänään aurinko nousi ensimmäisen kerran virallisesti horisontin yli. Virallisesti ja virallisesti, laskutapoja on monta ja eri instanssit on hieman eri mieltä asiasta eikä aurinko tänne kylään paista vielä moneen viikkoon. Niin ja pilvistähän tänään oli muutenkin. Perinteinen Solfestuka sisältää kaikenlaista ohjelmaa, jonka kohokohta on tietysti se hetki, jolloin aurinko paistaa vanhan sairaalan rappusille (jos sää on hyvä) perjantaina 8.3. kello 1230. Vanhasta sairaalasta ei tosin ole enää muuta jäljellä kuin nuo edellä mainitut rappuset, jolla seistessä voi vastaanottaa auringon...

Another dark season ends now: we had the first sunrise this year. Nevertheless, even if we had not had cloudy weather, the sunlight won't hit the town until after a couple of weeks. The official proper sunrise takes place during the Solfestuka, the Sun festival week in early mid-March. That's when the Sun will shine to the staircase of the old hospital - if the weather is good that is. And the staircase is the only thing left from the old hospital...
