Tuulee / A bit windy

Lokakuussa tuli neljä kertaa enemmän vettä kuin normaalisti ja meno jatkuu. Maanantain ja tiistain aikana voi tulla 30-50mm vettä ja paikoittain jopa 100mm. Koska lämpötilat on plussan puolella ja maa ikiroudassa, sadevesi ei imeydy vaan valuu rinteitä alas ja kertyy laaksojen pohjille. Pahimmassa tapauksessa saadaan siis maanvyöryjä. Muutamia asuntoja on Longyearbyenissä evakuoitu varmuuden vuoksi, koska kuvernöörin sanoja lainaten tällaiseen säähän ei olla Huippuvuorilla totuttu eikä oikein osata arvioida mahdollisia seurauksia.

We are in the middle of a rain strom even though it is November. At this time of the year, one expects to have freezing temperatures (it is +6C) and snow. Last year, we had to use a beltwagon to go through snow to the observatory, but this morning we just drove there with a car. The amount of rain with strong winds is so unusual up here that the authorities are worried about possible effects such as landslides. About 140 persons have been evacuated from their homes just to be rather safe than sorry.
