Duunikaverilla oli suunnitelmia laskea verkot Gipsvika-lahteen ja todettiin, että voishan sitä lähteä mukaan retkelle. Firman venekuskeilla on mahdollisuus ajoharjoitteluun firman veneillä, joten otettiin lainaan vähän isompi purkki. Kaksi virallista venekuskia ilman varsinaisia matkustajia oli ihan hyvä juttu ja mulle uudet maihinnousupaikatkin oli sellaisia, joihin saattaa joskus päätyä kuljettamaan opiskelijoita. Tällaisen vapaaehtoisen ajoharjoittelun bensat pitää tietysti maksaa itse.
Duunikaverin parempi puolisko on biologi, joka keräilee vanhoja poronluita tarkempaa analyysia varten: vanha tarkoittaa tässä tuhansia vuosia vanhoja luita. Poronluiden lisäksi vuorenrinteiltä löytyi jännästi kierteellä olevia luita, jotka on kuulema hylkeestä. Ja sitten oli huomattavasti isompia valaanluita hyvin esillä tai sammaleen alla piilossa mutta helposti havaittavissa.
Kahdella pienellä verkolla saatiin saaliiksi yksi (iso) nieriä, josta riitti illallisainekset neljälle.
In order to drive a small boat for work, one needs all sorts of training and certificates - there are several past events reported in this blog that are connected to e.g. rescue exercises with the SAR helicopters. Anyway, there is a perk that we, the official boat drivers, can use the work boats for practice trips during evenings and weekends if there is no other activity. In fact, we are encouraged to head out there when the conditions are a bit rough to see how the boat handles bigger waves - obviously the idea is to do this together with another boat driver from work. We do need to pay the fuel ourselves, of course, but not everything fun comes free, anyway.
Well, we did a nice foggy/low-cloud training trip to Gipsvika where the weather was nice, the winds calm and the arctic char fresh. While waiting for the catch-of-the-day, we explored the area. We had a biologist with us: she was collecting (really) old reindeer bones on the way. Great trip with great ideas for some follow-up hikes... and the dinner was fantastic!
