Oli tarkoitus viedä innokas duunikaverikalastaja vesille, mutta olohuoneen ikkunasta näkyi valaiden hengityssuihkuja kotivuonon ulkoreunalla. Muutettiin siis suunnitelmaa: käydään ensin tsiigailemassa valaita ja käydään vasta sitten poimimassa parit turskat.
Niemen takana oli kuin olikin isompi parvi valaita pössäyttelemässä. Varmaan ainakin tusina tai enemmänkin vähän siellä sun täällä. Paikan päällä arveltiin, että noin isot vonkaleet voisi olla sillivalaita. Lajitunnistukseen saatiin vahvistus duunikavereilta myöhemmin. Kyseessä on siis toiseksi suurin valas, vain sinivalas on isompi. Vastasyntynyt poikanen on hieman isompi kuin meikäläisen vene ja kasvaa lopulta jopa 27m pitkäksi. Ihmettelin kuvista, ettei hengitysaukko ja selkäevä näkynyt kuvissa samaan aikaan. Selitys on yksinkertaisesti se, että hengitysaukko on valaan etuosassa ja evä vasta piiiitkän selän toisessa päässä. Valaiden katseluoppaassa on hyvä kuva pinnalla käynnin vaiheista.
Valaiden katseluohjeissa neuvotaan, että veneellä pitäisi lähestyä hitaasti sivulta tai noin takaviistosta ja korkeintaan viiden solmun nopeudella ja mielellään vain kellua paikallaan ja antaa valaiden puuhailla omiaan. Näin tehtiin ja muutama valas kävi varsin lähellä venettä puhaltelemassa kovaäänisesti.
Käytiin vielä poimimassa muutama turska, minkä jälkeen vein parit tutut porometsälle, mutta se onkin sitten toinen tarina...
The binoculars in living room are a great accessory. On Saturday evening, we spotted several whales breathing just outside of Adventfjorden - the tall blows were clearly visible in the evening light. They were still there next morning, so instead of going fishing, a colleague from work and I decided to do some whale watching first. Well, it was my decision because I'm the Captain of the ship, but he was more than okay with the suggestion. There was a pod of at least ten fin whales hanging out just behind the corner. These are the second largest whales after the blue whale and there were fin whales all over the place! While checking my photos, I had wondered why I never seemed to catch the blow and the tail in the same photo. Well, the reason is that the breathing hole (or holes) are in the front of the whale while the fin is at the back of the loooooong back. This is nicely illustrated in Whale Watching Handbook. By the way, a newborn babywhale is usually slightly larger and heavier than my boat and the parents can be up to 27m in length.
The recommended way to watch whales from a boat/ship is to approach from the side and rear and slow down to max 5 knots or just simply stop. Often the whales come and check out the boat just out of curiosity. While we were floating, some of the whales did come pretty close to the boat. The breathing sound is massive. And the whales appear much larger when they are closer...
Once the heart rates were back to normal, we drove out to the usual fishing spot to fill the fish box. No problems with that.
