Hornsund

Ehdin jo jonkin aikaa pohtia, mitenkähän hyvin puoliaaltodipolin viritys mahtaa onnistua puolalaisilta, mutta sitten kävikin niin harmillisesti, että "jouduin" itse lähtemään keikalle Hornsundiin. Noora lähti mukaan "tolppa-apinaksi". Toki tässä taustalla oli laajempi yhteistyökuvio, jossa UNIS:lta pyydettiin apukäsiä jäätikkömittalaitteiden asennukseen. Mikäs siinä, samalla tuli sitten asennettua meidän Doppler-instrumentin lähetinantenni ja autettua Oslon yliopiston revontuliporukkaa, jolla on myös mittalaitteita Hornsundissa. Ja se varsinainen työ eli jäätikön sulamiseen liittyvien mittalaitteiden asennus onnistui myös hienosti. Puolalaiset rahtaavat omat muonansa mantereelta, joten tarjolla oli kaikenlaisia uusia tuttavuuksia, joita ei Longyearbyenistä saa mitenkään.

We were asked for help in installing equipment for measuring glacier ablation at Werenskioldbreen in the Southern Spitsbergen near Hornsund. There was no way to say no to an opportunity to visit the Polish Polar Station, so we boarded MS Horyzont II for an overnight trip to south. We have had trouble with the antenna of our own bistatic Doppler radar (the receiver is in Longyearbyen), so we re-installed and tuned an inverted V antenna. Meanwhile Darek - our glaciologist who needed the extra hands for carrying stuff - sorted out his own gear and packed everything ready for us. The main work took place at Werenhus, or the Stanislaw Baranowski Polar Station. We set up weather stations, measured water flow in the rivers and collected water samples. And ate too much great food and too many Polish treats...

Noora lähti ampumaradalle ja meikäläinen vuonolle uimaan. Sillä aikaa pulmusemo asettui pönttöön. Jos menee hyvin, niin parin viikon päästä pöntöstä kuuluu piipitystä.

We did some more safety training. Meanwhile, the buntings moved in and the female is (hopefully) sitting on the eggs. Wikipedia says that it will take about 12 days before the eggs hatch, after which another 12-14 days before the chicks will do testflights.

Äijäpulmuset on aamuisin karjuneet talojen katoilla tositarkoituksella ja näyttää siltä, että meidän pönttö merinäköalalla on kelvannut yhdelle pariskunnalla. Pöntössä on ollut houkutuksena muutamat heinät pohjalla, mutta patjan paksuutta on nyt kasvatetettu huomattavasti. Pulmusta isompia höyheniäkin on jostain löytynyt pehmikkeeksi. Aluksi naaras oli selvästi "hankala" ja koiras koitti kovasti houkutella sitä pönttökierrokselle. En tiedä, mitä ovat sitten yön valoisina tunteina puuhailleet, mutta nyt naaras on ollut kovasti polkemassa heinäkasoja tiiviimmäksi. Tietänee, että voi joutua hautomaan pesässä pari viikkoa paikallaan, joten pesä on syytä tiivistää huolella.

Several male snow buntings have been very vocal on the roof, but it looks like one of them has found a mate. There were several shows at the bird box, where the male tried to get the female interested in examining the details ("come in, check the bedroom and the TV lounge"). Of course, the female pretended to not be interested, but eventually approved of the box. Since then there has been a flow of cargo flights with all sorts of soft things and accessories necessary for a proper nest. I am guessing that the female will soon be staying at home and letting the male go shopping for food.
