Kylmää käppäilyä / Cold shots in the (not so) dark

Ylempänä tunturissa on jonkin verran lämpimämpää kuin laaksossa, jossa on noin -24C. Onneksi ei tuule, mutta huppu pysyy kuitenkin tiukasti päässä.

Everybody who has been in cold temperatures knows the weird mixture-mode hiking: some parts of you are sweating while others feel like they'd already frozen solid. It was one of those days today: wet hat and really cold fingers.

Punaista ja oranssia / Approaching the end of darkness

Tässä on vielä muutamia viikkoja auringonnousuun, mutta keskellä päivää on selvästi valoisampaa kuin aiemmin. Horisontissa alkaa myös näkyä päivänkajoa ja Isfjord-vuonon toisella puolella alkaa jo näkyä tuntureita. Viime päivinä on myös ollut erinomaisen hienoja punaisia värejä taivaalla. Vaikka aurinko ei valaisekaan maahan asti, se valaisee yläilmakehän helmiäispilviä, joista valo lopulta heijastuu tännekin saakka. Ja värjää koko taivaan ja maiseman punaiseksi.

Still no sunlight reaches the ground this far north, but it does reach polar stratospheric clouds somewhere between us and Tromsø. That light reflects this way and due to refraction of light in the atmosphere, we get only the red colour this far. Very spectacular scenery, indeed.

"Kaamoshiihtoa" / Here we go again

Perinteinen etelänretki suuntautui jälleen kohti Ylläksen latuja. Tällä kertaa otettiin ennakkoon vielä lisäviikko (ja joulubuffet) Levillä. Tuttuun tyyliin hiihtojoukkuetta oli vahvistettu australialaisilla, joista yksi innostui kaiken lisäksi kokeilemaan luisteluhiihtoakin. Kelit oli paria päivää lukuunottamatta varsin lämpöisiä. Yksi aito kissa nähtiin latukahvilassa, muut olivat enemmän ulkokissoja, joiden tehtävänä oli laittaa ladut kuntoon edellispäivän hiihtäjien jäljiltä. Tromssan autovuokraamosta tuli tällä kertaa sellainen vankkuri, jonka varusteista puuttui lähinnä espresso-keitin...

The practical arrangements for the annual dark time skiing had started several months ago, just like with any expedition. The first decision had been to go first to Levi for a week and then continue at Ylläs for another week. That should be sufficient time for long and longer episodes with so called wet-hat skiing. While the last rental car from Tromsø had technically been just fine - it had four wheels out of which two could be turned with the steering wheel - this time I had chosen another car category. Well, we did not get a car: we got a medium-sized mothership designed for supporting planetary raids in the asteroid belts in nearby galaxies. It had everything except an Espresso machine and we suspected it definitely had oxygen masks in case of sudden loss of cabin air pressure...

Other highlights include a live cat that we met in a cafe, skinny & long-legged (funny looking) reindeer and lots of light. The skiing was good, too.
