Keittiön ikkunan alla on vuoroin kiirunoita, poroja tai sitten naaleja. Etenkin naalien kannalta tämä on erinomaista aikaa hankkia muonaa pöytään. Haahkat pesii koiratarhalla, jossa ne luulevat olevansa turvassa. Naali on kuitenkin kettuna sen verran ovela, että häkkien sisällä haukkuvat koirat eivät häiritse. Ulkonakin haukkuva koira on hihnalla kiinni koirankopissaan, joten eipä siitäkään tarvitse välittää. Illalliseksi on siis joko haahkaemoa itseään tai, jos haahka lentää pois, haahkanmunia. Asia on jo noussut esille Svalbardposten:ssa.

The Svalbard summer is a hectic time for wildlife and the eiders don't have an easy life. When it is not a Glaucous gull or some sort of a skua, it is the arctic fox looking for a meal. The foxes apparently hide some of the extra food and we spotted this one checking the cache by looking out of the kitchen window.

Pikkuveljen syntymäpäivän kunniaksi oli syytä lähteä hiihtämään. Kesähiihdon huono puoli on se, että auringossa tulee sikakuuma. Lumi oli paksua ja märkää. Hiihtomonotkin hörppäs jääkylmää vettä puronylityksessä paluumatkalla. Normipäivä siis.

To ski or not to ski is not a question, so we headed towards Nordenskiöldfjellet. To be fully honest, the original plan was to go boating but low clouds had filled the whole fjord (and home valley). Boating is not so fun if you cannot see more than 50m.  Instead, it was a much better idea to climb above the clouds and ski in the sunshine. There was a mandatory stop on the way home to get some icecream.

Italialaiset aikovat päästää irti suunnattoman vappupallon, jonka tarkoitus on kuskata iso radioteleskooppi stratosfääriin noin 37km korkeudelle. Tämä on pallo numero kaksi ja observatoriomäellä onkin kaivettu vanhoja OLIMPO-mission laitteita ja antenneja esiin komeroista ja lumen alta pitkin viikkoa. Italialaisten vuokra-autossa on tietysti kesärenkaat, joten sillä ei ihan vielä pääse observatoriolle saakka.

There is always something going on at the observatory. This time the Italians are back with a second launch in their OLIMPO experiment. Of course, the first challenge is to get to the observatory with a rental car that already has summer tires... The road was already opened, but after a couple of days we got more snow and back to driving the beltwagon.

On se iso! / Bigger and better?

Satamaan oli pölähtänyt aamulla kaikkien aikojen suurin risteilyalus, joka on koskaan käynyt Longyearbyenissä. Väkeä ja busseja oli kaupungilla aika paljon, mutta ei mitenkään älyttömästi aikaisempiin laivoihin verrattuna. Jotenkin olisi olettanut, että 6000 henkilöä (4500 turistia ja 1500 miehistöä) olisi näkynyt enemmän. Ei kuitenkaan jääty kaupungille hengailemaan, vaan käytiin pienellä tuulettumiskierroksella lähimäellä.

A big cruise ship is indeed big, but then there is MSC Meraviglia, which is by far bigger than anything else seen in Longyearbyen before. There were mixed feeling in the town before the arrival of 4500 or so tourists (and 1500 crew). Some locals said that they would not step outside their home on Saturday. The shop owners have also been reporting more thefts whenever there is a cruise ship in the harbour. It is not easy to notice if somebody steals something when the shop is packed with people. And then there is the stuffed polar bear with a "do not touch" sign that does not stop tourists petting the bear when taking selfies or other photos. Well, the kids have done good business selling small pieces of coal and fossils they have collected themselves.

Vaikka tässä on taas sadellut lunta, varma kesän merkki on kajakit vuonolla ja hienosti kulkevan veneen kipparin typerä virne. Toissapäivänä oli hyvin möykkyistä keliä – vajaan metrin merkitsevä aallonkorkeus – mutta tänään ei ollut kuin leppoisia maininkeja tyynessä kelissä. Tuossa kotivuonon suulla on pyörinyt sinivalaita, mutta ei siellä nyt mitään näkynyt tai kuulunut. Pitää varmaan lähteä joskus toistekin veneilemään...

I just cannot avoid weird associations when I look at my brand new D5L certificate that qualifies me to be the "master of a pleasure craft". Maybe I am just becoming a dirty old man and misinterpreting the English language once again. More seriously, the certificate actually allows me to captain a boat up to 24m length. When you read the legal text more carefully, the boat must be registered to Norway and the allowed sailing area comprises the Norwegian coastal waters. Of course, Svalbard does not belong to Norwegian coastal waters. So I will need one more course to legally drive the UNIS boats. The good news is that I don't pay as much boat insurance as those who don't have the D5L papers.

Kuvernöörin kopteri pöristeli alkuillasta, mutta ei tietysti siinä vaiheessa sytyttänyt. Hieman puolenyön jälkeen alkoi taas kuulua ison kopterin meteliä ja tällä kertaa älysin siirtyä parvekkeelle kiikarin kanssa tsiigailemaan. Sitten tulikin kiire hakea kamera. Karhu oli aiemmin illalla löntystellyt Adventdalenissa kohti Longyearbyeniä ja sitä oli sitten hätistelty pois koiratarhalta. Koiranruoka (tai koiraruoka?) oli selvästi sen verran houkuttelevaa, että kuvernööri päätti antaa karhulle uudestaan lisää vauhtia.

At this time of the year, if the governor's helicopter is hovering somewhere near the town, they are either training or there is polar bear that needs to be driven away from the city. It is always great fun to watch seals or whales from the home balcony: this time the midnight visitor was a fairly muddy polar bear. It needed a stronger hint to stay away from the dog yards, so a helicopter woke me up just in time to grab the binoculars and the camera.

Kertausta ja pulikointia / More safety training

Firman normaaliin käytäntöön kuuluu se, että vähintään kuuden kuukauden välein pitää käydä ampumaradalla harjoittelemassa niin aseen turvallista käsittelyä kuin maaliin osumistakin. Edellisellä kerralla tuli paukuteltua nk. työkiväärillä, mutta tällä kertaa otin mukaan oman kiväärin. Sekin näyttää toimivan ihan hyvin. Tällä viikolla ohjelmassa onkin sitten saanut itse olla kouluttamassa alokk.. eikun uusia opiskelijoita. Uudet tulokkaat saivat ensin paukutella, minkä jälkeen koko porukka vietiin uimaan pelastautumispuvuissa. Henkilökunnan kanssa otettiin vielä päälle vähän isompi muutaman päivän pelastusharjoitus kotivuonolla. Kotimaan meriveteen tottuneelle paikallisessa vedessä on huomattavasti enemmän suolaa. Lämpötila on mukavan kesäiset +2-4 astetta, mutta aurinko kyllä lämmittää hyisen viiman keskellä.

Another day in the office: we regularly head out to the shooting range to practice shooting ourselves and to teach our students to shoot. The additional spice this week was our internal boat rescue exercise, which we actually carried out together with the folks from the Norwegian Polar Institute. Plenty of man-over-board cases. Very useful as well as great fun...
