Marraskuun loppupuoli ja oikeastaan myös koko joulukuu oli kiireistä aikaa observatoriomäellä. Kolme luotainrakettia - yksi Andenesista ja kaksi Ny-Ålesundista - oli odottamassa laukaisua oikeaan aikaan. Tuo "oikea aika" oli sitten hankalampi rasti. Peruskuvio oli se, että aamulla lähdetään observatoriolle noin klo 6. Sitten tarkistettiin, että kaikki maanpintalaitteet toimivat oikein. Ja sitten odotettiin, että sekä sää että avaruussää olisivat kohdallaan. Yleensä niin ei käynyt, joten palattiin takaisin kylille alkuiltapäivän aikana. Sama ruljanssi sitten taas seuraavana päivänä viikonloput mukaanlukien.
Ensimmäinen raketti
ICI-5 saatiin taivaan tuuliin heti toisena päivänä mittailemaan päiväpuolen revontulia, mutta sekä
CHI että C-REX-2 olivat hankalampia tapauksia. Kummassakin tarkoitus oli tutkia yläilmakehän tuulia värillisten kaasupilvien liikkeiden perusteella. Optiset kolmiomittaukset tehtäisiin observatoriolta, Ny-Ålesundista ja NASA:n lentokoneesta, joten sään pitäisi olla riittävän hyvä, jotta saataisiin hyviä kuvia. Lopulta kävi niin, että vain CHI tuprautteli väripilviä ja C-REX-2 pakattiin takaisin laatikkoon odottamaan vuotta 2021, mikäli jotain muuta ei stiä ennen keksitä.
The December rocket campaign turned out to be partially successful with two rockets out of three getting launched. The first rocket ICI-5 just needed to be launched in the daytime aurora to be successful and the launch was on the second day of the campaign. For, CHI and C-REX-2 there were some extra requirements as they would be releasing tracer gases. The motions of colourful gas clouds were to be recorded with cameras in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund as well as onboard an airplane. Of course, then there was the question of the space weather: the daytime aurora needed to be in the target area (i.e. where the rockets would be launched into). And on top of that, there was a specific time window, too: the upper part of the atmosphere should be in sunlight for the tracer gases to work properly. CHI was finally launched at the very end of the launch window but C-REX-2 will be packed back into its box to wait for another try in 2021 (or a launch from elsewhere).
