Another beautiful noon in Svalbard: the sunlight get reflected back from the clouds somewhere between us and the mainland and as a result we see red colours in the sky.

Mönkiäiset kömpivät yöllä työhön pitää sinänsä paikkansa, että pimeää on myös päivällä. Eteläisessä horisontissa toki on valonkajoa, mutta päivän pimeys on se nk. juju revontulien tutkimiseen juuri täällä. Yksi tutkimusraketti meni jo ja tänään lähti se toinen, joka pari vuotta sitten jäi laukaisematta. Andenesistä Lofoottien pohjoispäädystä laukaistiin raketti noin 10:25 paikallista aikaa. Sitten 12 minuutin päästä nelivaiheisen raketin hyötykuorma saapui kohteeseensa. Värilliset kaasupilvet kertovat siitä, miten tuulet ja hiukkaset liikkuvat 100-300km korkeuksilla. Tarkempaa tietoa löytyy NASA:n lehdistötiedotteesta ja kameran kennolle tarttui hienoja kuvia.
Kameroita oli niin observatoriolla kuin Ny-Ålesundissakin. Lisäksi Grönlannin rannikolla partioi NASA:n snadi suihkukone, joka sekin oli pullollaan kameroita. Kun tiedetään, missä ja milloin kuvat on otettu, niin taustalla näkyvien tähtien avulla saadaan väripilvien tarkat paikat selville perinteisin suuntimamittausten avulla.
It was a pretty unusual day at the observatory today. We had a lot of people manning the camera stations and waiting for a rocket launch from the mainland Norway. This is not that unusual in itself, but today was also the very first day of the rocket campaign and the rocket was launched! There is a sidestory about a broken laser in one of the instruments at the observatory: the replacement laser arrived yesterday and was installed just a couple of hours before the launch...
This was actually the second time C-REX-2A was aimed towards the cusp region above Svalbard (i.e. the primary target for auroral research in Svalbard). Last time we used all days of the launch window and neither the normal weather nor the space weather collaborated: the rocket was never launched. Tomorrow we'll head up again to pack all extra cameras, but we don't need to leave the town at 0630 in the morning.

Viime aikoina on ollut paljon vihreitä pilviä, mutta nyt näkyi vähän revontuliakin pilvien raoista...

Sää näytti jälleen lupaavalta ja päädyttiin vaihteeksi lähikukkulalle tunnustelemaan talven tuloa. Lunta ei ole vielä riittävästi hiihtoon, vaikka yhdellä porukalla olikin "hieman" optimistisesti sukset kiinni repuissa. Noustiin Larsbreenin kautta Sarkofagenille ja jatkettiin matkaa Longyearbreenin suuntaan. Yllättäen alamäen keskeltä löytyi luolan suuaukko (ja paljon jalanjälkiä). Luolan perältä löytyi hienoa sinistä jäätä!
Every winter there seems to be something new. On the way down from Sarkofagen towards Longyearbreen, there is a short icecave with a spectacularly blue ice wall. We would probably have walked past the cave entrance if we had not met some of our students. Of course, there were lots of footprints in the snow leading to "nowhere", which should have been a very strong hint...

Hieno ja tuuleton syyssää houkutteli ulos retkelle. Adventdalenin joki on jo sen verran jäässä, että otettiin taksi vanhalle revontuliasemalle, josta sitten käveltiin suoraan laakson poikki toiselle puolelle. Alunperin oli ollut ajatus käydä Tenoren-tunturilla, mutta sinne näytti olevan menossa niin paljon porukkaa, että mentiinkin viereistä rinnettä ylös kohti Dirigenten-tunturin rinteitä. Ihan ylös ei menty, mut olis voitu. Nähtiin aurinko viimeistä kertaa tänä vuonna. Paluumatkalla otettiin suunta suoraan kohti kotia laakson poikki.
About this time of the year we usually visit Tenoren, a nice summit on the other side of the valley called Adventdalen. But we made a snap decision to climb up the slope on the other side of Ugledalen. It looked like there were enough of people heading up to Tenoren without us. We got the last glimpse of the Sun this year.

Pandemian jäljiltä lentoliikenne ei selvästi ole vielä palannut "normaaliin". SAS ei lennä Suomeen ja täältä lähtevällä lentsikalla ei ehdi saman päivän Finnairin tai Norwegianin Oslo-Helsinki-lennolle. Eikä muuten ehdi myöskään Helsingistä takaisin Osloon, jotta pääsisi mukaan lennolle pohjoiseen. Kumpaankin suuntaan tarvitaan siis yksi hotelliyö Oslossa. Mutta noin muuten suuret väkijoukot on innolla lähteneet matkustamaan joka suuntaan, kun koronarajoituksia on purettu. Kaikki lennot oli ihan täynnä.
The flight routes and their schedules are still not what they used to be before the pandemic. Right now getting to and back from Finland requires an extra hotel night somewhere on the way. The good news is that you can find rye bread and proper chocolate in Finland. We had a few rainy days when we got back to Longyearbyen but right now the crisp early winter with blue skies and -10C is very refreshing. Not enough of snow for skiing, though.
