UNIS on taas täynnä opiskelijoita, mutta muuten "ologit" (geologit/biologit) ovat sitä mieltä, että kenttätyökausi on loppumassa. Ei pidä paikkaansa: etelässä oli jo revontulten kajoa ja ensimmäiset firman repokamerat on jo päällä.

The pink-footed geese are flying restlessly around the valley and the Svalbard ptarmigans are white again. The "greens" on the slopes have been orange and yellow for a few weeks. And one needs to switch on the lights at home in the evenings. So, one can probably expect winter, although we need more snow...

Syksyä ilmassa / Towards winter

Yhtenä iltana totesin, että en enää muista, kummasta katkaisimesta tulee valo ruokapöydän päällä olevaan lamppuun.Oikea nappula kuitenkin löytyi lopulta, mutta ilmeisesti ei olla vähään aikaan käytetty kattovaloja. Pikkuruokit on lähteneet ajat sitten ja Isfjord-vuonon vastarannan tunturit ja jäätiköt komeilevat auringonlaskun aikaan. Luntakin on jo tullut (ja mennyt), joskin lämpötilat pyörii vielä noin viiden ja kymmenen välillä täällä cityssä.

Darkness is approaching and the autumn colours can be seen almost everywhere. The local hunters are looking for reindeer and ptarmigans as well as pink-footed geese. We have had a polar bear mother with two cubs in the neighbourhood: it seems to be quite usual that the bears will come, then they will be chased away, and then they will return again...
