Kevättä ilmassa / Approaching summer

Pari viikkoa vielä siihen, että aurinko nousee horisontin yläpuolelle. Keskellä päivää on huomattavan valoisaa ilman täysikuutakin. Mutta juuri nyt ulkona on kylmää kuin jääkarhun... Laakson pohjalla lunta on ilmassa muutaman metrin korkeuteen maan pinnasta, mutta observatoriolla oli tänään kirkasta ja hienoa. Ja kylmää.

There is quite a bit of daylight in the sky around noon already. A couple of weeks to the sunrise and Svalbard is offering its best with the full Moon illuminating the scenery. The weather, however, strongly encourages you to watch the view from inside...

Once more a reminder to keep the eyes open whenever it is dark outside. Not too cold and no wind to mention either.

 

Kotitöissä / Working from home

Norjan viranomaiset suosittelivat, että kaikki kynnelle kykenevät voisivat tehdä etätöitä. No, Noora on vallannut olohuoneen sohvan konttorikseen, joten mulla on sitten alakerta. Oman vuokrakämpän remontointi on selvästi loppusuoralla: tarvitaan enää pari pientä juttua, kuten makuuhuoneen, kylppärin ja alakerran käytävän lattiat. Niin ja makuuhuoneen ja kylppärinen välinen seinä olisi myös ihan kiva juttu.

Keski-ilmakehän otsonin mittauksia varten pitäisi kuulema rakentaa radiometri. No, sellaista en ole aiemmin kyhännytkään. Pitää varmaan hakea duunista vielä spektrianalysaattori lopputestejä varten.

The Norwegian authorities strongly recommended people to work from home if at all possible. I did anticipate this and transported all sorts of gear to my home laboratory before Christmas. Well, the equipment is more or less occupying the whole mattress in the guest bedroom. Gyro Gearloose would feel completely at home in the lab and building an Ozone radiometer from various random parts not really intended for that use would be a perfect project for him. Fun fact: Gyro Gearloose is called Petter Smart in Norwegian.

Sulitjelma

Perinteinen jouluhiihto kotimaassa jäi nyt suosiolla väliin, kun ei kiinnostanut päätyä 10 päiväksi karanteeniin mihinkään Tromssan hotelliin. Tilanteen pelasti duunikaveri, joka ystävällisesti tarjosi mökkinsä meidän käyttöön, kun kerran itse aikoi viettää joulun Huippiksilla. Tromssasta ajeltiin vuokra-Volvolla Bardufossin kautta Fauskeen (Bodøn itäpuolella) ja sieltä sitten Sulitjelmaan. Auto parkkiin ja muutaman kilometrin hiihdon jälkeen oltiin perillä keskellä koivumetsää. Lunta oli laihanlaisesti, mutta eipä se menoa juuri haitannut. Hieno keikka ja pusikkoseikkailut suksilla olivat hauskaa ajanvietettä, kun oli niin valoisaa...

Crossing the border to Finland might have worked, but we'd be quarantined for 10 days on the way back to Norway. A (very good) colleague from work offered her cabin to be used, which essentially saved our Christmas skiing holiday. Now the Plan was to stay in Norway, concentrate on xc-skiing and completely avoid the quarantine. So, we skied in the birch forest, on the tundra (which had little snow) and did some general bush-whacking, too. An excellent trip without any worries. The lights and colours were superb, too!
