Karl Bayfjellet

Vaihteeksi tarjolla on erinomaisen hieno keli: ei tuule, lähes pilvetön taivas ja aurinkokin on vielä horisontin yläpuolella. Tiedossa on pitkä retki, joten "huijataan" vähän ja otetaan taksi viidakon laitaan eli Endaleniin. Pikkupakkanen pitää ylimääräiset hiet kurissa ja höttölumi peittää kaikki liikkuvat kivet. Nopeusennätyksiä ei olla tekemässä. Seurataan naalin jälkiä harjannetta pitkin huipulle saakka. Karl Bayfjellet on itse asiassa aika kaukana ja korkeuttakin on hieman yli kilometri. Huipulta pääsee huomattavan mukavasti alas paksua lumikerrosta pitkin, mutta sitten täytyy vielä könytä ylös laakson toista reunaa, jotta pääsisi Larsbreenin jäätikköä takaisin kylille.

Another beautiful day in Zamunda calls for a long trip into the snowy wonderland. You-know-who has been talking about Karl Bayfjellet quite a few times in the past years, so it is time to do something about that trip. A taxi drops us in Endalen and then we climb up to a plateau we have never been to. The targeted ridge is, of course, at the far-end of the plateau, so we walk in the extremely fluffy snow for quite a while. The route to the top is easy: we just follow the tracks of an arctic fox all the way. Instead of simply getting a taxi back from Endalen, we use a shortcut that takes us past Trollsteinen onto Larsbreen. And walk all the way back home.

Joka syksyyn kuuluu olennaisena osana se, että ensin tulee pimeää ja sitten tulee lunta. Noora tosin ehti juuri ja juuri kerätä lähes kaikki lähialueen ml. takapihan ja työmatkan sienet ennen lumentuloa...

The approaching winter is giving some prewarnings, the temperature is supposed to drop to -8C next week. Meanwhile, we have got (lots of) rain, medium-sized wet towels from the sky and, of course, first snowfall.

Pilvet notkuu korkeimpien huippujen päällä, mutta muuten on tyyntä ja hienoa. Lähdetään ensin kohti Lindholmhøgdaa, mutta päädytäänkin seuraamaan Gruvedalenin jokiuomaa ylös. Trollsteinin jälkeinen harjanne on ihan pilvessä, joten oikaistaan Larsbreenin yli Longyearbreenille. Syksyä on selvästi ilmassa, mutta turska ei vielä kovin ihmeellisesti nappaa koukkuun - pari vonkaletta saatiin kuitenkin nostettua veneeseen.

Rather than following the "official path" - which we had not yet reached - an imprompt turn to right led us into Gruvedalen. The valley was pretty narrow in one spot, but eventually we found ourselves on a mid-level plateau. A short uphill with loose rocks led us to the upper plateau. Instead of heading up to Trollsteinen, we again turned right and, after some interesting navigation around melt water channels, we crossed Larsbreen. When we walked towards the town on Longyearbreen, we noted that there had been quite a number of landslides. Also, near the fossil hunting grounds, there used to be a quite large ice cave. It definitely has been a record warm summer.
