Luolaretkellä / Into the ice...

Oli syytä lähteä hiihtämään. Ihan minne tahansa. Arvottiin hetken sitä, onko sää sellainen, että hiihtely on yleensäkään järkevää. Siinä vaiheessa, kun tultiin takaisin kotiin, lähtö hiihtämään ei olisi enää ollut kovinkaan järkevää...

Tänä vuonna Longyearbreenin jääluola on taas iso ja pitkä. Muutamissa "jääsaleissa" on hauska kaiku eikä luolassa tarvitse pahemmin kyyristellä tai ryömiä.

The bad weather is approaching, so we headed out for a quick ski trip to the nearby icecave in Longyearbreen. It was windy and there were not only tourists (with beltwagon) but also locals and their friends with snowmobiles. We spotted only one other skier today, although there was one Longyearbyen-style skilift in operation. This ski lift type comprises a snowmobile with a sledge and a dad driving the kids up the hill so that the youngsters can then ski down.

Aurinko nousee / The boating season begins...

Aurinko on nyt sitten virallisesti noussut horisontin yläpuolelle. Ei se tosin vielä näy vuorten takaa, mutta ainakin periaatteessa meillä on kaamos loppu. Tuttuun tapaan valo villitsee kansaa ja kelkkojen pörinää ja käryä on ilmassa. Sääkin on aivan erinomainen esimerkiksi veneilyyn: tuli viimeinkin tilaisuus käydä ajokokeessa, jolla kuittaan itselleni paikallisen huvivenekuskin paperit. Tarvitaan tosin vielä yksi lisäkurssi, jotta se kelpaa täällä Huippuvuorilla. Veneestä näkyi muuten tämän kevään ensimmäinen lintu, joka ei ollut kiiruna (se oli isolokki).

We have a lot of boating activity at UNIS during the summer and – because there is not that much to do with aurora when there is no darkness – I have been taking various courses required to drive a boat in a commercial environment (= work). I am now almost ready with the boating stuff with today's practical driving exam successfully completed. What I have accomplised so far would be sufficient for mainland Norway. However, Svalbard is considered European waters, so there is still one intense week in school waiting for me somewhere in future. Nevertheless, I did have a lot of fun driving a new type of a boat around Adventfjorden in beautiful winter weather...

Valon määrä kasvaa taas lähes 40 minuuttia per päivä ja loppuviikosta auringon pitäisi jo pistäytyä horisontin yläpuolella. Asiaan kuuluu tietysti paikalliskuoron konsertti, jonka innoittamana paikalle pelmahti sekalainen seurakunta kotimaasta. Konsertti onnistui ja revontuliakin näkyi.

The amount of light is again increasing rapidly. The first sunrise will be later this week and the best part is that we got plenty of new snow. The combination of light, snow and good weather makes it difficult to stay in the office as many of us would rather be skiing...

Oslo

Tuli heitettyä pikakeikka Osloon. Oli sateista ja pilvistä ja paljon ihmisiä.

A quick trip to Oslo. It was interesting to notice that not everyone is wearing outdoor clothing all the time and some prefer to dress sharply (regardless of the rain and icy walkways...)
