Lähdettiin duuniporukalla veneilemään kohti pohjoista. Määränpäänä oli Ny-Ålesund, jossa tarkoitus oli keskustella paikallisten kanssa tulevista yhteistyökuvioista. Noorahan on käynyt siellä kurssinsa kanssa kenttätöissä, mutta voisi olla hyvä, jos muutkin proffat ottaisivat mallia. Meidän kannalta olennaista oli tsekata mestat ja varusteet. Käytiin myös ajelemassa veneellä lähivuonoissa katsomassa mahdollisia maihinnousupaikkoja. Menomatkalla korkeimmat aallot oli varmaan luokkaa kolme metriä, mutta paluumatkalla oli nk. tasaista kyytiä ja erinomainen keli. Tosin vielä seuraavanakin päivänä tuntui siltä, että keinuttaa tasaisella maalla...
A quick recon trip to north was on the menu. We took the biggest and newest boat we have in the armada amd sailed to Ny-Ålesund. After a (very) bumpy low-visibility ride out of Isfjorden, we eventually got to Forlandsundet where the seas were reasonably calm. The visibility was eventually more or less lost and the radar was a good instrument on the final stretch. The agenda of the visit was to discuss practicalities in case we would like to do more fieldwork in Ny-Ålesund. So, what equipment can be rented there (how many survival suits etc.), could we possibly use their smaller boats, is there a good classroom and whether our own safety training is considered sufficient etc. We ate too much whenever possible, but eventually had a very pleasant boat drive back to Longyearbyen in beautiful summer weather.
