Villin lännen meininkiä / We sing both country and western

Kaikenlaisten mozartien ja bachien jälkeen Longyearbyen Blandakor vaihtoi viihteelle. Kevään konsertissa kuultiin lähinnä länkkärimusiikkia Aaveratsastajista alkaen. Seuraavaksi taisi tosin vuorossa taas jotain klassisempaa kuoro-ohjelmistoa.

The Wild West cannot really be compared to the Wild North. The main event of the local choir, Longyearbyen Blandakor, was a bit different this year. A common question among us the victims, I mean, spectators was how on Earth did they find so many cowboy hats in Longyearbyen? Ride'em in, cut'em out, rawhide!

 

Kehä I / The smaller loop

Kaiken epämääräisen sään joukkoon mahtuu toki hienojakin päiviä ja perinteinen nk. Endalenin luuppi oli vielä tekemättä tämän talven osalta. Lähes tyyntä ja muutenkin erinomaista keväthiihtoa. Duunipuolella on lähinnä tullut pohdittua norjan kielen yksityiskohtia. Norjaa heikommin hallitseville kerrottakoon, että tilhenger on peräkärry ja påhenger puolestaan veneen perämoottori. Jos kollegat katsovat oudosti, niin täytyy tarkentaa, että tarkoitus ei varsinaisesti kyllä ollut viritellä firman autoa veneilykauteen sopivammaksi...

The standard fjellski loop: start from the front door, head towards Valley #1, go around Trollsteinen and descent Longyearbreen glacier back home. And visit the ice cave while in the neighbourhood. Done.

Wappuhiihtoa / X-country skiing

1.5. on täälläkin vapaapäivä ja latukoneen kuski oli innostunut ajamaan ladut toiselle puolelle vuonoa. Perinteisen tyylin suksia ei kovin usein pääse täällä hyödyntämään, joten laitettiin aurinkorasvaa naamaan ja lähdettiin murtsikoimaan. Paikoin oli varsin napakka tuuli, joka oli ehtinyt jo paikoin hieman täyttää latu-uraa. Mutta olennaista oli se, että vappupiknikki pidettiin (lähes) lämmittävässä auringossa. Lämpötila noin -8C ja tuulta puuskissa noin 10m/s. Eipähän ollut räntää...

The driver of the machine that prepares the ski tracks for the Svalbard ski marathon had decided to do another tour to the other side of the home fjord. This was an opportunity that we did not want to miss, so instead of trying to find a nice ski summit, we went cross-country skiing. The weather was occasionally very refreshing, but the picnic spots were excellent...

SAS:in lentäjien lakko näkyy ja tuntuu: täällä ollaan eikä pois pääse kovin helposti. Norjan uutisten mukaan neuvottelut lentäjien ja työnantajan välillä eivät ole juuri edenneet mihinkään näin parin ensimmäisen lakkopäivän aikana.

The SAS pilots' strike has resulted in a lot of cancellation of flights. There is the option to use Norwegian, the only other airline with normal route flights to Svalbard, but it's likely the ski marathon tourists will spend a few extra days in Longyearbyen.

Drømmepåske? Dream on...

Pääsiäinen on norjalaisen ulkoilukulttuurin tärkeimpiä tapahtumia. Asiaan kuuluu se, että ihan kaikkien on päästävä jonnekin hiihtämään. Paikallinen säätiedottaja hehkutti unelmakeliä lähes kaikkialle Norjaan eli tulossa oli todellinen drømmepåske (unelmapääsiäinen). No, meidän(kin) oli tarkoitus lähteä vähän pohjoisemmaksi telttailemaan ja hiihtelemään, mut ei sit lähdetty. Pilvet pyyhki laaksonpohjia, satoi ihan sikana vettä ja, vaikka tuulen olisi pudottanut puoleen, puuskat olisivat silti heilutelleet tukevampaakin hiihtäjää. Viimeisenä lomapäivänä päästiin sentään käymään tyynessä kelissä Foxdalenissa hiihtelemässä. Edes jotain.

At first, we only postponed the departure towards North, but then we had to accept the fact that it would be (much) safer and wiser to not go. Strongs winds, zero visibility on the glaciers and low clouds would have made our planned snowscooter/skiing adventure just plain miserable. No point in going somewhere where you cannot see the new scenery (which is supposed to be awesome). So, we stayed in town. Well, we did get one good day at the end of the holiday. Of course, now that the work begins tomorrow, the weather forecast looks very nice...

Kun on hieno sää, niin on hieno sää. Jos lisäksi vuorilla on lunta, niin sitten pitää vain päättää, minne lähtisi tällä kertaa hiihtämään.

Another beautiful weekend in Svalbard! Quite a lot of wind on Saturday in some spots but practically no wind on Sunday. Not bad at all.

Pakkohiihtoa pitkin hampain / Wimanfjellet

Kesäaikaan siirtymisen kunniaksi lähdettiin hiihtämään. Oli yksinkertaisesti aivan liian hieno sää sisällä pysyttelyyn. Menomatkalla bongattiin parit mursut ihan rannan vieressä eikä ne ollu siitä mihinkään hievahtanut sillä aikaa, kun käytiin kapuamassa mäki ylös. Rentoa jengiä ainakin tuossa kohtaa. Lumi oli aika kivikovaa ja epämääräistä ihan huipulla, mutta hieno laskumäki siitä lopulta tuli!

Last time we tried Wimanfjellet, the visibility was not that great. So, another trip was what the doctor(s) ordered. There were a couple of large flippered marine mammals hanging out on an iceberg next to the shoreline. It was appararently so important to hang out that they were still in the same spot when came back several hours later. Posing in the evening sun etc.
