Otettiin todellinen äkkilähtö etelään, kun SAS:in hinnat oli ensin
karseita ja sitten yhtäkkiä kohtuullisen järkeviä. Lentolippujen
hinnoittelu on hieman outoa puuhaa, mutta hintaerolla sai suunnilleen
kuitattua vuokra-auton viikoksi. Huippiksilta lähtiessä hyviä
kiipeilykohteita löytyy näppärästi heti Tromssan nurkilta, joten
matkustus on oikeastaan aika tehokasta. Ensin tunti lentokoneessa ja
sitten reippaan tunnin päässä (ajo + lähestymismarssi) on esim. Brensholmenin
kiipeilykallio. Kallio itsessään on upean hiekkarannan vieressä
Sommarøyan vieressä ja sää on usein huomattavasti parempi kuin
Tromssassa. Mainio telttailuviikko keskellä vihreyttä!
Outdoor
climbing in Svalbard is not a particularly exciting even though the
rock quality is definitely worth mentioning: it is really bad and there
is a lot of loose stuff. So, we headed for some southern climbing in
Kvaløya near Tromsø. There were trees, green grass (people were mowing their
lawns!) and small flying things, of which some would bite and the rest
just collectively irritate us by flying into the eyes and ears. In large
clouds. But, besides really good climbing, there are two bonuses: no
need to have polar bear guards outside the tent and then
there is the probably best grocery store in Norway (https://eidehandel.no/).
In particular, the second bonus ensures very tasty evening meals. Fresh
strawberries and an "exotic" and extensive selection of things you
won't find in any Coop's or Rema1000 shops. Excellent trip and we did,
of course, meet our old friend Rick, who was climbing the route next to us in Brensholmen. Not
really a surprise - for those who know Rick - but slightly unexpected.
