Dark Season Blues-festarit. Klubin puuhamiehenä toimiva EISCAT-tutkan insinööri kysäisi, josko haluaisin toimia yhden suomalaisen bändin paikallisena nk. bändi-isäntänä. Pari yötä meni sitten siinä, että tuli katsottua, että kaikki löytävät perille oikeaan aikaan ja että systeemi pelaa. Onneksi

Mutta se varsinainen blues tulee kyllä siitä, että meidän hienon SuperDARN-tutkan antennit eivät kestäneet arktista säätä. Lämpötila ja tuuli olivat sopivat ja kaikkiin rakenteisiin ja kiinnitysköysiin takertui useita tonneja ylimääräistä jäätä. Pikainen arvio on, että painoa on voinut olla jopa 20-30 tonnia enemmän kuin normaalisti. No, ei auta: kerätään romut pois ja rakennetaan uudet antennit ensi kesänä.
During this Dark Season Blues one can now start a song by "I woke up this morning and my radar is gone..." Extreme icing on guylines and structures was way too much and the antennas collapsed within a short time. Based on webcamera images taken every 15 minutes, we think that the whole event took just a couple of tens of minutes. This type of icing is not unknown here, but it does not happen that often. Based on a couple of samples, we found out that there would be 1-2kg of ice per meter in guylines and cables. If my memory works right, we used about 16km of ropes, so the extra weight can easily be somewhere in the range of 10-20 tons. With winds around 20m/s grabbing the suddendly very thick ropes and pushing everything towards the heavier side...
Nevertheless, we will need to clean up the site and rebuild new antennas next summer. The big question is what we should change in the design. And whether it is even realistic to expect to be able to engineer an antenna array that will survive all possible conditions in the future.
