Huh, huh... Uudet opiskelijat on taas täällä ja maanantaista lauantaihin on ollut turvallisuuskoulutusta. Aiheita riittää ja sekä opiskelijat että kouluttajat on umpiväsyksissä viikon jälkeen. Pandemian aikana on tullut kokeiltua kaikenlaisia virityksiä ja meikäläinen on joutunut vähän hyppimään lumivyöryetsinnöistä jäätikköpelastukseen, mutta tänä vuonna koulutin kollegan kanssa "hätäleirin pystytystä" koko viikon. Käytännössä aiheena oli siis talvitelttailu ja bensiinillä toimivan retkikeittimen käyttö. Kurssin lopussa on aina isompi loppuharjoitus ja opit olivat selvästi menneet perille: kaikki opiskelijaryhmät saivat telttansa pystyyn 10-15 minuutissa.
We have new students for the semester up in Svalbard again. The first course they take is the mandatory safety course "Arctic Survival and Safety" where the topics range from risk management theory to crevasse rescue. It would have been good to have some more snow, but otherwise the conditions were quite ok all week. A colleague and I were the instructors for the "Emergency equipment" exercise, where the students got to try out liquid fuel camp stoves and how to set up a tent in snow. In the final grand exercise, all student groups had their tents up within 15 minutes. So, they can now quickly setup a camp if they need to do that. Plus these skills are very useful on their private skiing trips later in the spring...
